A Night Of Hope

Jesus is Greater

As a Church, we are embarking upon a study of the Book of Hebrews.  Each week, we will capture an element of a chapter of Hebrews with the aim of growing together in out understanding that Jesus is greater!  There are many resources and ways to get involved in this study, and we encourage that you get involved together, in community.  We also hope that the Book of Hebrews will be part of our conversation and encouragement towards one another.

We have provided several links and resources for you below to review and consider as we study the Book of Hebrews together.  We have created a summary booklet and printed this available at Church, however you can also download this as a PDF - Book of Hebrews from here

The Bible Hub offers a helpful Book summary.

Listen to the Book online either in the NIV or in the MESSAGE version by clicking the link.

You can also watch an overview on Hebrews from the Bible Project below.  The Bible Project is a great resource portal and study area that will be of great help to you.  You can also read the bible online through the same portal.

Anew

Anew is an adverb that means 'in a new or different and typically more positive way.'

Think about a holiday.  You still eat and sleep - but the experience and location is different from the normal. Think about change - change means different, and can also mean new.  The saying a change is a good as a holiday is a thoughtful phrase as it is insightful for our lives.

But God takes this 'new' concept and breathes His life into it - actually meaning something NEW... Paul says thing in Ephesians 2:10 - For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

New things are everywhere in scripture - and what makes the new really interesting is that it is something to behold....  The prophet Isaiah records God speaking about the 'new' in  Is. 43:19

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

and again in Is 65:17

For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.

But it is not just Isaiah - but also a motif throughout the New Testament.   Revelation encourages us to behold the new...

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”  (Rev 21:5)

The work of Jesus is at the very centre of this 'anew-ness'  The writer of Hebrews refers to a new covenant or new deal - a new way to live and exist in Hebrews 8:13

When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.

Paul writes in Ephesians 2:15    He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups.

and writes again encouraging us to not only behold but to practice and partake -  Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.  (Eph 4:24)

So this new thing is something that is the very work of Jesus - something we must behold and something we must put on....

This April, let us be reminded that we need to BEHOLD the NEW, that we need to PUT ON the NEW
- and that GOD is in the business of the NEW.....in order that we might continue in the good things he has planned for us long ago!

Desire Series

This February, we are looking at the concept of Desire. Desire is understood as a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.

Desire is a powerful forces within us – and can be found in Creator God too.
Jesus encourages us to search the scriptures to better understand His desires… ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ (Matthew 9:13).  The Psalmist expresses the desire of God for us to be satisfied (145:16) and fulfilled (145:19).  And proclaims God’s desire for us to live in a way that is honest (Ps 51:6) and broken (51:17).

There are many things to desire from the tangible to the intangible, and from the valuable to the sentimental.  And genuine desire drives and motivates us.  The bible speaks about our desires calling us to delight in the Lord and the desires of you heart (37:4).  The Psalmist encourages us to pray to the Lord to grant us our desires and give us success in our plans (20:4).

How connected is God to your desires?  Or better still, how does your delight in the Lord affect your desires?  And what are the desires of your heart?

This February, our prayer is for the scriptures to unfold the what, who, when, how, and why we desire what we desire.  It is our hope that our shared desire for God would increase, deepen, and grow – that we would take delight in the Lord.  And with every desire we have, that we would move closer to serving Jesus.
